City Center Las Vegas is Finally a Reality

While much has been made of CityCenter’s difficult birth, far less attention has been paid to the design behind it. It’s a design that speaks in equal parts to the challenges of the Las Vegas Strip, the unsustainable sprawl of the Las Vegas Valley (now home to 2 million people) and a fundamental shift in American demographics.

“After 30 years of suburban flight, people are moving back into the urban core,” says Billy Vassiliadis, CEO of R&R Partners (the ad agency behind the “What Happens Here, Stays Here” campaign). “You see it in Boston and Chicago, and we’re going to see more of it in Las Vegas. People are increasingly interested in living in a place where everything they want — shopping, restaurants, entertainment — is nearby.”

Aging Fag: Workout Slumps

There are weeks when it is just so damn hard to work out! I am talking about those times when it is almost impossible to find the motivation to do it like the past several weeks have been for me. I am also talking about how when I do eventually find your motivation (it is generally the thought of feeling better) my performance is just not what it should be. Cardio seems almost impossible at first and weights that I normally manage well seem heavier and the number of sets and reps I can do suffer. Sometimes this changes as I get into the my routine and others I just do not perform as I generally can throughout the entire session. I am not sure of the cause exactly. I suppose it is a normal occurrence that everyone experiences from time to time. Hang in there boys, do your routines anyway and know things will get back to normal. They always do and you will be glad you stuck with it.

The Crossover: American Marketing Genius

I hate the so called "crossover". You take three of the ugliest ideas ever conceived in automobiles... the station wagon, the mini-van and the hatchback... sprinkle in some marketing and advertising hocus pocus... and shazam... people are opening their wallets and lining up to buy them. I get that they may be functional but I have never been one that considers pure function over style and beauty. I do believe that function and beauty can coexist. But hey that's just how I roll. To each his own. I will however continue to shudder when I see your ugly-mobile pull up beside me.

Weekly Wanda!

Wanda Sykes, The Wanda Sykes Show
We caught the premier episode of The Wanda Sykes Show last night and she was awesome! Most people that know me know that I absolutely LOVE Wanda Sykes so I am thrilled to have the opportunity to watch her weekly. But as she said when she came back from the first commercial break... "Have I been canceled yet?"

I am actually a bit surprised that the show was on in this market at all and am just waiting for it to be banished to some 4:00AM time slot as happens to so many shows that dare to step outside conservative lines and dare to challenge the sheepish common thinking.

Videos by Brett Watson

I discovered this guys videos recently and have really been intrigued by them. It is something that goes beyond the obvious use of guys bodies (which works for me too). It is almost like watching memories of my own... boys being boys and interacting together. I guess in a way they are basically home movies on steroids. Anyway I give you the works of Brett Watson. I hope you enjoy them as I have.

Aging Fag: Good Healthy Meals for Busy People

It's sometimes hard to have good meals when you and your family have so much going on. But there are things you can do if you are a little creative. Tonight after getting home and before our Monday workout I started this soup. I chopped onion and simmered into olive oil and then added chunks of hormone-free organic sausage and then added chopped potatoes. Added some chicken broth, water and seasonings and let it cook over low heat while we went to the gym. Upon returning I added some frozen corn and let it cook while we changed. Served with crackers or some good whole grain breads it is delicious, easy and nutritious!

New Biz Flourishing Around My House!

After years of seeing buildings razed, boarded store fronts and lackluster city life things are beginning to change. It's exciting to see the new businesses and the crowds that they are attracting. I am also hoping to see the old Utah Theatre refurbished and re-opened as the anchor for "Broadway-Style" productions as well as the possibility of Mayor Becker's vision of a bar district on and near Main Street, putting an end to Utah's absurd two bars per block rule.

Of course now our home is for sale and we will be moving soon. Maybe all the action will attract some buyers to our lovely condo though! :-)
